This Privacy Policy explains how the BeforeYouLeave app for iPhone and iPad (“the app”), developed by iDev (“we”, “us”), handles your information.
In short: BeforeYouLeave stores your trips, lists and family profiles only on your device. It has no accounts, no advertising and no analytics or tracking. The only information that leaves your device is what's needed to look up your destination's weather — the place name and trip dates — which is sent to Open-Meteo without any information that identifies you.
What the app stores, and where
- Your trips — destinations, dates, transport, activities, packing lists, checklists, templates and notes you enter, stored in the app's private storage on your device. Cached weather for each trip is stored with it.
- Traveller profiles — names, age group, colour and any notes you add. Notes may include health details such as allergies or medication if you choose to enter them; these are used on your device only, for example to suggest packing medication.
- Personalisation — if you turn it on (it is off by default), the app learns from your past trips which items you pack often or don't need. This is worked out and stored on your device only.
- Settings — preferences such as appearance and how lists are grouped.
Trip descriptions and itinerary import
When you describe a trip or import an itinerary (text, PDF, image, screenshot, email or calendar file), it is read on your device — using Apple Intelligence's on-device model where available, and Apple's Vision framework to read text in images. The file you choose is not uploaded anywhere and is not kept by the app; the trip details extracted from it may be saved in the trip, including its notes.
Weather
To show a forecast, BeforeYouLeave sends requests to Open-Meteo, a weather service:
- the destination's place name and your device's language, to find the location; then
- that location's latitude and longitude and the trip's dates, to get the forecast or past weather.
No name, account, device identifier or your own location is sent. As with any internet request, Open-Meteo receives your device's IP address. Open-Meteo's handling of requests is described in its terms and privacy policy. BeforeYouLeave does not access your device's location.
Permissions
- Notifications — used for local reminders before departure and any extra reminders you set. They are scheduled on your device; no push notification service is used.
- Photos and files — chosen with Apple's photo and document pickers, so the app only receives what you pick. No photo library permission is requested.
When information leaves your device
- Weather lookups, as described above.
- Device backups — iCloud or computer backups of your device include the app's data, according to your device's backup settings.
What we do not do
- iDev does not receive or store any of your trips, lists or profiles — we have no servers.
- We do not use analytics, crash-reporting or advertising SDKs, or any third-party code.
- We do not track you across apps or websites, or share data with data brokers.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete trips (with their lists and reminders), items, tasks, travellers and templates in the app, and reset what Personalisation has learned in Settings. Deleting the app removes all of its data from your device (copies may remain in existing device backups).
Purchases
BeforeYouLeave does not contain advertising. If the app is offered for a price or with in-app purchases, payments are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store; we do not receive your payment details.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your country).
Your rights
Because we do not collect or hold your personal information, we have no personal data about you to access, correct or delete — everything is under your control on your device, as described above. Changes to this policy
If the app's handling of information changes, we will update this policy, post the new version at this address and change the effective date below. Significant changes will also be described in the app's release notes.
