Frequently asked questions
Does StorageByte delete anything automatically?
Never. Nothing is pre-selected; you choose every item. Photo deletions are confirmed by iOS and go to Recently Deleted in the Photos app for 30 days, so you can recover them. File deletions in the Files tab are permanent, and the app asks you to confirm first.
I deleted photos but my free space didn't change.
Deleted photos stay in Photos › Albums › Recently Deleted for 30 days and still use space until then. Empty Recently Deleted to free the space immediately. If you use iCloud Photos with “Optimise iPhone Storage”, sizes shown are for full-resolution originals, so the space saved on the device may be smaller.
What happens when I convert photos to HEIC or keep only the photo of a Live Photo?
StorageByte creates a new photo and moves the original to Recently Deleted, after iOS asks you to confirm. New photos are added to the SBHEIC (HEIC conversion) or SBPhotos (Live Photo) album. The date, location, favourite and hidden status and your albums are kept. Captions, keywords, people tags and the ability to revert edits are not carried over, and Live Photo motion is removed. Space is freed once the originals are removed from Recently Deleted. Savings shown before converting are estimates.
Why does StorageByte need access to my photo library?
To measure how much space your photos and videos use and to find duplicates, similar shots and large items. It also needs write access to delete or convert photos when you ask it to. You can grant limited access and choose which photos it can see.
Why is “System & apps” shown as one total?
iOS doesn't let apps see how much space other apps use, so StorageByte shows space used by the system and other apps as a single figure. Likewise, no app can free memory used by other apps, so the Memory tab shows what's happening rather than offering a clean-up button.
How are similar or blurry photos chosen?
Similar photos are found by comparing photos taken close together in time using Apple's Vision framework. Blurry, dark and accidental shots are detected with on-device image analysis. Results are suggestions — always review before deleting. Favourites, screenshots and photos stored only in iCloud are skipped.
